The walled city is a very adventurous, original and absorbing book to read. The plot revolves around Neil, a well-known thief in the city of Ladem. When he is to be exposed to the Beast, the most horrific punishment you can get, he ends up in a very astonishing scene in which he takes his time to take revenge on the mayor in an incredible way. With its atmospheric storytelling, intriguing storyline and strong characters, The walled city is both literally and figuratively hard to put down. I would highly recommend this book to any type of reader.

Neil Pick-pocket has been a thief all his life, living in the city of Ladem until he gets exiled for his crimes. Exile is no ordinary punishment in Ladem, however: it is the worst punishment, worse than a death sentence. Ladem is located in a desolate wasteland, terrorized by a Beast which hunts and kills all those foolish enough to leave the city. Neil must rely on all his wit to survive even one night outside the city walls, while brooding on the best way to take revenge on the mayor, to introduce justice again. This is a story of courage, of brotherhood, of the victory of truth and the power of lies.
Over de auteur
Annefleur Teeuwen (1996) enjoys writing next to her studies at Leiden University. She has always enjoyed reading books and loved to dream away in worlds outside the normal one. This love has lapsed over to a new love: the writing of stories. She has written short stories before, but this is her first real novel. The Walled City is a story of all her thoughts about deception in an exciting story full of adventure.

The voices came closer and closer, until Neil knew they were in the garden.
"You, check the house!" he heard an officer shout.
"The door is locked from the outside, he’s not there!" came the reply.
"He couldn’t possibly have climbed up the walls in so little time without help, and he definitely did not go back the way he came. He must still be here! Search the place!"
Neil felt the cold sweat break out on his forehead as he cowered in the outhouse. Any minute now…
Suddenly, the door was jerked open; Neil desperately grabbed the wood from the inside, but the officer was too quick for him.
"Well, well, well, look who we have here", the officer said, looking down on Neil. Now that Neil had been caught, he did not cower any more. He rose to his full height, and though he was still much shorter than the officer, he looked defiantly back into his eyes.
"Bind him!"
