Samenvatting

This is a family story book about the Dutch celebration of Sinterklaas and the magical tale of Saint Nicholas through the ages. First, present day Sinterklaas parties and events are described along with the origins and gradual developments over the years. Sinterklaas has written his story as a gift for one of the book’s characters to read aloud to family and friends at their ‘pakjesavond’ (presents evening) party - The Story of Saint Nicholas, from Saint to Sint to Santa.

Inkijk

They would certainly have wonderful memories of Sinterklaas to share when they got back to Canada. Fran’s Mom asked what the strange Dutch word, gezellig, means. "That’s hard to translate", commented Wim. "Cozy, warm, familiar, and fun - so this is gezellig - celebrating Sinterklaas with family and friends." Of course, they all enjoyed the special cakes, cookies and sweets made for the occasion.
And so it continued, with presents and poems and surprises, until finally, it was Thom’s turn.
To his surprise, he suddenly found a red envelope on his chair with his picture on it. "Open it", everyone exclaimed. Inside, he found a paper with another picture on it - this one was a little boy’s bed. "I know it", he cried out. "My present is in my bed!" Not so, he discovered. There he found another red envelope. Inside was a picture of a car. "Daddy’s car," he shouted, running for the front door.
Alas, there was no present in the car either - just another picture, this one of a small green bicycle. "In my bike bag - for sure, my present is in my bike bag!" His excitement was growing by the minute, but alas, again, all he found in his bike bag was yet another picture - this one of a bath tub. "I hope I don’t have to take a bath!", he howled. Luckily not - tearing upstairs, he found a lovely red package in the tub and tumbled downstairs to the party to open it. "Oh boy, just what I really wanted", he exclaimed. "Cows and chickens and pigs and everything for my Lego farm - even some nice sheeps!"
