Inkijk
The motivation for a drawing, and then a painting, was always, as long as I can remember, a person. After a phase of indiscriminately sketching or painting people from my immediate neighbourhood who allowed me to use them for practice I subconsciously started to choose the people whom I depicted.
Firstly there was the need for "empathy". I found it difficult to paint people whom I disliked. But that did not prevent me from depicting people who ap-peared "ugly". Socially disadvantaged and psychically damaged people always aroused my particular interest, for example Harry who is handicapped and "Irmgard".
Meeting the individual now forms the primary impulse for my creative work.
As I increasingly chose to photograph people in a pose which typified their life or their situation I wanted to transform them into generalised figures which permitted me to make my pictures more colourful and to combine the people with statements about circus life which also fascinated me.
