Despite her young age of 25, she has endured profound traumas including bullying, sexual assault, and other challenging experiences. These trials fuelled her passion for mental health advocacy, a cause she champions fervently. With a BA in Applied Psychology and an MA in Social Media Communications, she blends her academic knowledge with personal insights to break the stigma surrounding mental health. Enorm dapper, poetisch proza, fantastische illustraties, grijpt naar de keel
The majority of young people sail uneventfully through their adolescence. Some of them encounter rougher weather. And an increasing number sail through storms and hurricanes. For some of those the journey ends in shipwreck and possibly even death. Others manage to hold on to buoys and eventually climb a rocky shore to go on living a full life.
Freya Spillemaeckers is one of those people. Her book, "A nightmare Called Adolescence" describes in painful detail her journey. How bullying and other events made her descend from happy childhood into a very private hell. But also how she managed to climb out of that dark hole and went on with her life.
The book has been written as a sort of diary, which allows the reader to consume it piece by piece.
I believe this is an important book for young people who suffer from being young as it has been written by one of their own who survived. But it is also an important book for parents who may be flabbergasted by what is going on and who often feel totally helpless.
