Samenvatting

Birthday-girl Angie gets just what she wanted: the dolly she had seen in the window of a mysterious little shop. Angie calls her Bella, and soon finds out that the shop was not only mysterious, but also has fairy magic. Bella can come alive and talk to her! Having a magic dolly has some drawbacks, though: Angie can only talk to Bella when she becomes doll-sized, and when you shrink, your clothes don’t shrink with you! There’s Angie’s lively sister Veronica to deal with. And Bella? Well, let’s just say she doesn’t have a very fairy-like personality.

Over de auteur

"When my daughters were little, I wrote and illustrated this book to read to them. My girls loved it, but I never attempted to have it published. Now that my children have grown up they ask, 'Whatever happened to that book you wrote? It was so lovely, why don’t you publish it?' Now that I have retired as a teacher and have four grandchildren, finally the moment has come."

Inkijk

Queen Emerelle was smiling at them all. Bella opened her mouth to speak, but the queen raised a finger to her lips in warning. There was no sound to be heard, except a great deal of muttering coming from behind the papers on the larger desk. Seralina and Queen Emerelle exchanged glances, and then the queen said, "Your visitors are here, my dear."
The muttering ceased, and "What? Who?" could be heard from behind the papers. At last, a head revealed itself - a head with pointed ears, a curling black moustache, and a piece of paper on top of it. The eyes in the head sparkled at the three friends, and the moustache quivered as the mouth spoke.
"Too big!" it said, and the head disappeared.
The muttering started again, this time more clearly.
"Where is that letter? I had it a moment ago. Where did I put it?"
The queen put down her darning, and stood up.
"I think you’ll find it on your head, my dear," she said, as she passed the king. She walked round the desk, produced a wand from the folds of her dress, and lightly tapped Bella, Angie and Veronica.
By the time she had returned to her stool, the three companions discovered that the desk, previously knee-high, was now up to their chins. This was a little disconcerting for them, but it clearly made the king feel better. He divided the papers on his desk, leaned across it, and looked down at them.
"Aha!" he said, and gave them a glittering smile.
