Inkijk

The air was filled with smoke, which carried a strong stench of burning flesh. It was at this point that Rachel became fully aware, for the first time, that her abilities far exceeded those of her parents.
Here she was now, confronted with a new phenomenon that even she had not undergone before. She had experienced many historical events, but this was different – it had the air of extreme reality.
Living through the violent nature of the event unfolding before her, she could not help but think back to the time when they had been such a close unit, before Reginald had joined the group.
Back then her innocence had been complete. Now she had encountered all that the world had to offer. It saddened her that although the group of five had been busy on all levels to render help to the slowly dying world, they hadn’t yet fully succeeded in their mission.
That morning, Rachel had quietly left their bedroom, not disturbing Reginald. She first went to the kitchen where she made some tea, which she took with her to the study. This was a spacious room filled with rows of bookcases; in the centre of the room stood several comfortable armchairs. She had walked to the far left corner and sat in the chair between the rows of bookcases in front of the French doors.
This had always been her favourite room, her favourite chair. Somehow she felt serene and relaxed there, a refuge after she had once again witnessed disturbing past experiences.
Feeling the first rays of the sun on her neck coming through the big French doors behind her, she closed her eyes and let the events unfold.

The date was 1893, the country Nigeria. The normal peace of the jungle was shattered that day.
