"What happens is that out of the blue words or phrases come to me, wherever I am. In a train, watching the landscape passing by. Or at home, in bed in the night. I scribble them down and leave them for a while. When the time has come, I put them together and order them in a meaningful sequence. The poems in this collection were gradually created over a long period of time."

We worden geboren, leven een tijd en nemen daar ten slotte afscheid van. In de tussentijd proberen we betekenis te geven aan de lotgevallen, aan het grote en kleine leed, maar ook aan het geluk dat ons overkomt. De bundel Overwegend wit gaat over die lotgevallen uit het alledaagse leven. In weemoedige taal beschrijven de gedichten geluksgevoelens, verlieservaringen, het grote en kleine leed dat zich voordoet. Maar steeds op een manier, die de ervaringen en waarnemingen in een ander perspectief plaatst. Er is veel wit tussen de regels, want er staat niet zonder meer wat er staat (naar Nijhoff, 1952).

Wie waren ze, wat is hun voorgeschiedenis, hoe hebben ze hun leven geleefd? Dit verhaal vertelt hun levensgeschiedenis tegen de achtergrond van sociale, politieke en economische gebeurtenissen.

In every person is a story and a history. This is also the case with the two men who are the main characters in this book. They are the author’s father, born and bred in the Netherlands, and his father-in-law, from British origin. Both men passed away many years ago. They never met each other. The connection between them is, that both were in Germany at the end of the Second World War. His father was in forced labour, his father-in-law a Captain in the British Army. This story recounts their life history in the context of social, political and economic events.
