Samenvatting
Symptoms and signs are the first indication of a dysfunction within the systems in the body. Giving these symptoms names may be convenient and help in the communication. Osteopathic medicine recognises the value of a medical diagnosis and has his own ways to define the underlying dysfunctions. This book will help in making a differential diagnosis when a patient presents with symptoms and signs. But keep remembering the quote from AT Still: “To find health should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find disease”.

Inkijk
Osteopaths are primary contact health practitioners and are trained to recognize conditions that require medical referral. They are also trained to perform standard clinical examinations of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, obstetrical and nervous systems. Osteopaths know and understand the pathological nature of any condition and can apply adequate osteopathic management and techniques to relief the symptoms associated with those conditions. Osteopaths treat the person and not the disease. They consider that a normal part of medical management of pathology and disease should be restoring or improving movement in all body tissues, as they believe this will help in physiological recovery.
In the osteopathic medicine profession it is, as it is in the regular medicine profession, important to know and consider different diagnosis for any presenting symptom.
There is continuous education and practical experience required to evaluate and treat patients safe with effective osteopathic manipulative techniques for a variety of medical conditions.
